Edward Braddock was born in Perthsire Scotland in 1695. As the son of Major General Edward Braddock he joined the Coldstream Gaurds and served in the Netherlands. Then appointed major general in 1754, he arrived in Virginia the following Febuary to command all British forces in North America against the French. After preparing for several months he decided to attack the French fort, Fort Duquesne, by way of a foolhardy wilderness expedition. His force contained over 2,00 men including George Washington, a lieutenant colonel at the time. Being short of Indian scouts Braddock's force was ambushed in a ravine by about 1,000 Indian and French troops. Braddock was wounded during the fight and died four days later in Penssylvania on July 13th, 1755.
