4th Earl of Loudon
John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudon was born on May 5, 1705 at Loudon Castle near Galston. During the 1745 Rising he raised a group of Highlanders to fight the Jacobites. He served as adjutant - general to Sir John Cope, commander in-cheif of the government forces. Parts of his force would later be captured and he would reinforce and continue operations against the Jacobites. During the February of 1746 he would attempt to capture Prince Charles at Moy Hall and fail. Around ten years later he would become commander-in-cheif of the British forces in North America, and during the French and Indian War he would have little success against the French. Then Loudon would later command British troops in Portugal against Spain near the end of the Seven Years' War. Afterwards back in Great Britain Loudon would be given the governorship of Edinburgh Castle, and the town of Loudon, New Hampshire would be named in his honor. Finally on his deathbed his cousin succeeded him as earl in 1782.
